1. What is Consumer Credit Counseling Service? The Consumer Credit Counseling Serive (CCCS) is a non-profit organization that has been serving residents of Chatham County and surrounding areas since 1965. As the name implies, it is primarily a credit counseling service. 2. Is there any charge for this counseling? For partial reimbursement of cost to an administer your Debt Management Plan and as a non-profit community service, we request a monthly fee for the cost of processing envelopes, checks, postage, phone and fax requirements. No one is denied our service for inability to pay. 3. How do I arrange for counseling? Just call the CCCS office to make an appointment for a face to face confidential session with one of our certified credit counselors. 4. What service does CCCS provide? CCCS advises and counsels families with any type of finanical situation. This involves: BUDGET COUNSELING- Good money management begins with sound budgeting. A budget is a written statement of estimated income and expenses for a period of time. You need to know where your money goes in order to establish an effective budget plan. This will allow you to see ways to eliminate unnecessary spending in order to live within your means. CREDIT COUNSELING- While we believe that the wise use of credit can improve the quality of life, it must be controlled. The use of credit is often abused and a family finds itself overburdened. This can be prevented with proper planning and budgeting. DEBT MANAGEMENT- When the counselor finds a family already burdened with excessive indebtedness, a debt repayment plan may be recommended. With the cooperation of the creditors this plan allows the client to make lower monthly payments, thereby paying the debts in a respectable manner. EDUCATION- Providing community wide educational programs in effective buying practices, family budgeting and money management, using credit wisely and many other aspects of consumer education is achieved through presentations, workshops and seminars. Educational programs are offered to high school and college students, civic and professional groups, church, employee and older adult groups. Also, consumer education booklets discussing various topics are available upon request. FIRST-TIME HOME BUYING 5. Who is eligible to receive the services of CCCS? Any resident of Chatham County and the surrounding area is eligible to receive the services of CCCS. A person need only to call the CCCS office to make an appointment for counseling or to request other assistance. 6. How does CCCS help people who are experiencing financial difficulty? A person experiencing financial difficulty meets with a professional counselor and discusses his financial situation fully in a confidential interview. The counselor then makes a complete analysis of the client's financial situation and advises the client on the best way to increase income or decrease expenses in order to balance his budget. 7. Are CCCS services confidential? Yes. It is the policy of the Board of Directors of CCCS that all information received from the client and the fact that the client is receiving counseling will be confidential between the client and CCCS, except when a debt liquidation plan is deemed necessary and the client's creditors must be informed. 8. Does CCCS serve only people who are experiencing financial difficulty? No. While CCCS concentrates much of its efforts on helping those with debt problems, the service is happy to meet with schools, civic, employee and professional groups as well as individuals to discuss sound money management. 9. What can CCCS do for you? This question cannot be answered until you have actually had the first session with a counselor. You are an individual with individual problems which must be taken into consideration. |
